Q: What does this turbocharger do for a Ford Transit?
A: The turbocharger compresses intake air and forces more oxygen into the combustion chamber — enabling efficient combustion of fuel and resulting in greater torque and power. This is especially critical in vans like the Transit that often operate under heavy load or towing conditions.
Q: Why did my old turbo fail, and how can I avoid repeat failure?
A: The most common cause of turbo failure is oil‑supply problems: restriction or blockage in the oil feed pipe, contaminated oil, or carbon/sludge deposits.
When replacing a turbo, it’s best practice to also replace the oil feed pipe (and inspect/clean or replace the oil return line, oil strainer, sump/oil‑pan pickup, and ensure the lubrication system is clean).
Old oil, debris, or overlooked deposits can quickly destroy a new turbo if not addressed.
Q: What other components should I replace or inspect when installing a new turbo?
A: For best results, you should:
Replace the oil feed pipe (and its banjo bolts/gaskets).
Inspect or replace the oil return (drain) line.
Clean or replace oil‑strainer/pickup (sump) to remove sludge or carbon.
Change engine oil and oil filter, ideally twice: once at installation, then again after 100 miles (or first run‑in period) to flush residual particles.
Check and clean intake pipes, air filter, intercooler, boost hoses/hoses for leaks, ensure no foreign debris — any contaminants can damage the turbo.
Verify exhaust and exhaust‑system components for blockage or damage if previous turbo failed.
Q: Is installation difficult — can I do it myself?
A: Installing a turbo is non‑trivial. It involves oil‑system work, correct oil priming, sealing, torqueing, and ensuring clean air/oil/exhaust circuits. Many technicians and turbo specialists recommend professional installation to avoid risk of immediate failure.
Q: How quickly should I drive after installation, and are any special steps required?
A: After fitting a new turbo — prime the turbo with clean engine oil BEFORE starting, then start the engine and let it idle so oil pressure builds and flows through to the turbo bearings.
Avoid heavy throttle or high load for the first few miles. It’s also good practice to change engine oil and filter again after a short run (e.g. ~100 miles) to flush out any residual debris.
Q: Will replacing the turbo restore full performance immediately?
A: If the new turbo is installed correctly with all supporting components refreshed (oil system, air intake, drain lines, filters), then yes — it should restore boost pressure, improve torque/acceleration, reduce smoke and bring the engine back to reliable operation.
